To achieve the project goal, long-term Air Quality Plans will be drawn up and implemented in the four cities to reduce polluting emissions from the industrial, residentail, tertiary and transportation sectors. Additionally, in two of them, Limassol and Larnaca, a Mobility Plan will be implemented with the aim of reducing one of the principal causes of urban air pollution: transportation.
Larnaca, has a population of 46.714 inhabitants (year 2001) and it is a popular holiday choice because of its proximity to the International Airport, the number of hotels along the beaches and its important commercial activity.
According to the SMAP Project, the main objectives
to achieve with the Mobility Master Plan of Larnaca are:
- To promote the centrality of the Central Business District (CBD) and
its economic activities and tourism.
- To carry out and intensive program of pedestrianisation of the CBD.
- To increase the use and competitiveness of Public Transport.
- To rationalize and decrease the use of private transport within the
CBD.
- To adapt air quality levels to the limits fixed by EU regulations.
- To get Kyoto protocol objectives (CO2 reduction)
submitted by EU.
- To define a parking policy with progressive higher fares to regulate
the demand and use revenues to invest in the global mobility policy.
- To create a database to define a set of indicators to follow-up the
mobility evolution in the city of Larnaca.
The present situation and the different proposals
will be tested with an energy and environmental balance, which means:
- To define energy consumption and atmospheric pollution levels associated
to the urban mobility.
- To calibrate the effects of the adopted actions to improve the inhabitants
sustainability.
